Post-construction cleaning checklist: what to clean before handover
In short. Post-construction cleaning happens in three passes: remove debris and heavy dust first, then clean every surface in detail (ceilings to floors, inside cabinets and light fixtures), then do a final check before anyone moves in. Fine construction dust keeps settling for days, so the order of the steps matters as much as the cleaning itself.
Why construction dust is different
Drywall, joint-compound and cutting dust is very fine. It gets into cabinets, window tracks, vents and fixtures and keeps falling after a first pass. A regular cleaning usually isn’t enough: work top to bottom and wipe horizontal surfaces again at the end.
Before you start
- Dust-producing work is finished (sanding, cutting, joints).
- Large debris and leftover materials are removed, or their removal is planned with the contractor.
- It’s clear who does what: contractor, you, or a cleaning crew.
- Water and power are on.
Step 1: rough clean
- Remove offcuts, packaging, tape and floor protection.
- Vacuum heavy dust from floors, sills and ledges.
- Vacuum accessible vents and grilles (without dismantling equipment).
Step 2: detailed clean, room by room
Every room
- Dust top to bottom: mouldings, door-frame tops, fixtures, ceiling fans.
- Wash or wipe walls according to the paint’s curing instructions.
- Switches, outlets and plates.
- Interior windows, frames and tracks.
- Doors, handles and baseboards.
Kitchen
- Inside and outside cabinets and drawers.
- Counters, backsplash, sink and faucet (carefully remove grout or adhesive residue).
- Appliance exteriors, and interiors if they were in place during the work.
Bathrooms
- Tub, shower, toilet, sink and vanity: grout, silicone and dust residue.
- Mirrors, accessories and fan grille.
Floors
- Vacuum, then wash according to the surface (wood, tile, vinyl, concrete).
- Corners and under baseboards last.
Step 3: final check
- Wipe horizontal surfaces again: fine dust may have settled.
- Check in daylight and with low-angle light for streaks and paint residue.
- Walk through with the contractor or future occupant before handover.
Small renovation or major project?
Light dust after small work (a bathroom, kitchen or basement) is usually handled by a deep cleaning. After major work with heavy construction, plaster or paint dust, you need a post-construction cleaning planned around the size of the job.
